Utility Pole Installation Goes Awry, Breaks Water Main

About 30 homes in Hamilton lost water service for several hours on Monday afternoon after a water main break.

More than two dozen homes went without water for about five hours on Monday afternoon after a water main was struck by a crew installing an utility pole.

The break happened on Porter Lane, off Asbury Street near Christ Church at 11:23 a.m. on Monday. Interim Department of Public Works Director Dave Hanlon said that the water main was broken by a National Grid crew relocating an utility pole. It cut service to about 30 homes on Porter Lane and Cunningham Drive until repairs were conducted about five hours later.

Hanlon said once the cost of the repairs are calculated, the town government will either bill National Grid or seek a credit to recover the cost of repairing the water main break.

“The neighborhood will be experiencing discolored water through the day and should be clear by mid afternoon (Tuesday),” Hanlon said.
