Two Horses Die in Wenham Barn Fire

The cause of the blaze has not been determined.

Two horses were killed in a barn fire at 69 Cherry St. in Wenham early Sunday morning.

The blaze was reported at 4:13 a.m. by a neighbor. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the barn was fully involved.

Under the direction of Wenham Fire Capt. Dan Sullivan, firefighters were able to contain the fire to just one barn. However, two horses were killed in the blaze.

"Due to the intensity of the fire, firefighters were not able to enter the barn." Wenham Fire Chief Robert Blanchard said.

Crews worked throughout the morning to extinguish the fire. Wenham Police and Fire were assisted at the scene by members of the Hamilton Fire Department, and Lyons Ambulance stood by for assistance. The Danvers Fire Department provided station coverage for Wenham.

A representative from the State Fire Marshal’s office was on scene to assist with the investigation. The cause of the fire is uncertain, though it is not considered suspicious.

Blanchard said firefighters were fortunate that the weather was warmer than it was just a few days ago, as the more moderate temperatures allowed the firefighting work to proceed without freezing lines or hampered hydrants.
