Driver in Crash That Closed Road Identified

The driver of a pickup truck that crashed through an utility pole on Route 1A on Thursday morning will not face charges.

The man behind the wheel of a pickup truck that veered off the road, smashing through an utility pole and closing Route 1A for the morning commute last week has been identified as a Winchester man.

Police said then man, Paul J. Whitney, 31, according to a report by the Salem News, will not face charges. He told police that he fell asleep as he was driving south at about 5 a.m. on Thursday along Route 1A (Main Street) in Wenham.

His Dodge Dakota pickup truck smashed through one pole, splintering it is two pieces and then striking another pole  further down the road.

Route 1A was closed for about five hours while a low hanging wire and broken pole were repaired. A detour sent drivers around the closed section of road during the morning commute.
