Hamilton Business Center Walk

The Walk About the Hamilton Business Center

This was not a walk to admire the state of Hamilton’s business center.

Led by Selectman Jeff Hubbard, it was a walk to show and discuss what needs to be done to make the center more attractive and negotiable by potential patrons of the many businesses.

It was a muggy Thursday evening. A couple of dozen people, including Hamilton’s Town Manager and its five selectmen, spent about an hour walking from the parking area behind Mike’s auto repair, out along Bay Road, next to the railroad crossing, then up and down Railroad Avenue, before returning to the starting point.

The bottom line is that there are a great many things that need quick attention. Here are a few comments:

Sidewalks need repair.

Some areas have no sidewalks.

Town owned parking area needs to be lined.

Businesses need to do a lot of weeding in front of their shops.

Directional road signs are needed on Railroad Avenue. The current one, exiting the post office, is nearly faded away.

More One Way signs are needed on Railroad Avenue.

Alleys between buildings need to be weeded.

Curb stones need to be painted.

Planters in front of businesses and the U.S. post office need attention.

(What happened to the bench the once was in front of the post office?)

Benches, once alongside sidewalks, are gone.

There are no American flags hanging along Bay Road, as there are in Wenham.

Crosswalks need a fresh coat of paint.

There are no banners along Bay Road and Railroad Avenue to indicate a unified business area.

Some people are talking about expanding the Hamilton Business Center. Before this can happen, the current center needs a lot of sprucing up.

So, who is responsible for getting this work done?

Property owners? Yes!

The Town of Hamilton? Yes!

The State? Yes!

The walking and talking has been done. Now it’s time to get working.
