Don't Look to Town Websites for Information on Upcoming Town Meetings

Both towns have set the dates of Town Meetings this fall. But they forgot to inform the public by putting information on the official town websites. We can to do better.

Do you use the Internet to get information about local events and issues? Of course you do! You’re reading this blog on Patch, the latest up-to-the-minute online media outlet for Hamilton and Wenham.

If you wanted to get information about the upcoming Fall Town Meeting in Hamilton or the Special Town Meeting in Wenham, where would you look? The logical choice would be the towns' official website, right?

Unfortunately, the town websites do not contain any information about upcoming Town Meetings. No mention of the date on the calendar, no tab to click for information on the issues to be discussed, no mention of the last day to register to vote. Nothing.

For those who’d like to know, here are a few dates:

  • Fall Town Meeting for Hamilton, Oct. 22 at 9 a.m. in the High School Auditorium. The warrant closed on Sept. 12 and includes a number of fund transfers and a by-law changes.
  • Special Town Meeting for Wenham, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Perkins Auditorium at the Buker School. Warrant has not closed, so articles are still being discussed.

I encourage the town officials to create up-to-date information on the town websites for the voters to stay informed and enable them to do their civic duty.
