MBTA to Begin Late Night Service Next Year

The one-year pilot program to expand subway and bus service is set to begin in the spring.

The MBTA will extend its service past 1 a.m. in the spring, as part of a one-year pilot program, according to the Boston Globe. Beginning in March or April, all subway lines and the 15 most popular bus routes will run service until 3 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

The increased hours will not extend to the commuter rail, according to an announcement from Governor Deval Patrick's office. Currently, the last train headed for Hamilton-Wenham leaves North Station in Boston at 10:40 p.m. on weekdays and 10:15 p.m. on weekends.

In an interview with the Globe, Patrick said he had secured the $20 million in funding, along with pledges from corporate sponsors to launch the expanded service in 2014.

MBTA service currently ends at 1 a.m., which doesn’t jive with bars and restaurants closing at 2 a.m. in the city, as well as schedules of late night workers throughout Boston.

The Globe says the new late service will also include the Silver Line, which serves Logan Airport and the Seaport District.
