The Rev. Alex Musoke, is known as the “Pencil Pastor” in his native Uganda. Every year for the past decade Musoke, a pastor for The United Methodist Church in Duxbury, visits his hometown of Buwaya, with as many as 3,000 pencils for delighted schoolchildren. The 61-year-old’s mantra is “Freedom and democracy start with the written word.” Musoke has personally made the deliveries since 2002 when he began the Give a Pencil Project (GAPP). Providing pencils for students who cannot afford them “can significantly change a child’s story,” said the Rev. Musoke, referring to the future opportunities an education represents.
