Venture Out: Gloucester

Revisit your younger days when you hopped in the car, started the engine and drove off in search of something fun. The Sunday Patch Passport maps out where you can go on a short drive from your home. You won't want to miss these unique stops on our trip.

Just a short drive north along the coast, Gloucester is a small fishing town brimming with beautiful views.

A good place to begin your adventures is the Visitor's Center. Volunteers there can point you in the right direction.

According to volunteer Rosie Sagall, one of the most popular activities is whale-watching. She said they guarantee you will see whales on your expedition.

"It's quiet and peaceful," said Winifred White, a Gloucester resident for 63 years.

White makes her way to the beach every day. "It doesn't get any better than this," she said.

A relaxing day on the beach usually makes a person hungry.

You're in a fisherman's town so eat like a fisherman and make your way to Causeway Restaurant.

Locals all agree this is the place to eat seafood because of the portion size.

"They don't know how to make anything small," joked a waitress about their serving sizes.

After lunch head to Cape Ann Museum. It's got many pieces by local artists that are inspired by the beautiful landscapes found in Gloucester.

For Susan Erony, a resident of Gloucester who worked at the museum, the town is not somewhere she expected to live.

As an artist Erony did not expect to stay in Gloucester.

"It has an incredible openness to eccentricity," Erony said. "I love Gloucester. I adore it. It's the only place that I have lived that I want to stay."
