Yesterday afternoon I stopped in to our two-town library for my weekly book fix, and was invited by Lorraine Der, the children’s librarian, to a behind the scene showing of the afternoon’s program for grades 3-5: The Whale Mobile!
I was introduced to Nile, a 43 foot inflatable humpback whale, the brainchild of Cynde McInnis. Cynde takes Nile on the road to schools, libraries and summer programs to teach students about whales and their oceans, and inspire a new generation of ocean advocates. She was gracious enough to inflate the whale just for me and I went inside the whale to see the heart, lungs, skeleton on the inside. It was truly a Jonah moment.
The Hamilton-Wenham library is the only multi-town library in Massachusetts. It is also the only library that has a basketball court attached to it, which was a very good thing, I don’t think the whale would’ve had enough open space to inflate, except horizontally.
Yesterday, when I was at the library, I met a life size whale. And that unusual encounter reminds me of one more reason to live our two-towns.
