Hamilton Restaurant Grabs Chowder Win in Ipswich

Ipswich is known worldwide for its clams - but it was a Hamilton restaurant that won this year's Ipswich Lions Club's Chowder Fest.

A month ago, clam chowder was not on the menu at 15 Walnut Bistro.

Today, it is an award-winning chowder.

The restaurant, located in the Shoppes at Hamilton Crossing, entered last weekend’s contest in a town synonymous with the clam - and won.

15 Walnut served about 500 samples – a total of 25 gallons of chowder – before being named the winner.

The Ipswich Lions Club hosted the event on Saturday, in the parking lot of EBSCO Publishing.

It all came together quickly, said 15 Walnut manager Monica Hallenstein.

“We signed up for the Chowder Fest and then put it on the menu,” she said.

Chef Sean Chanley came up with the chowder about three weeks ago, just in time for the contest. With the win, the chowder is on the menu now, she said.
