Freezing Rain May Cause Ice Build-up Through Monday Morning

The National Weather Service is warning of the possible dangers of freezing rain on Sunday evening into Monday morning.

A freezing rain advisory was issued on Sunday morning by the weather service for the North Shore and parts of north central Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire.

The advisory runs from 4 p.m. Sunday through 11 a.m. on Monday.

The freezing rain may result in up to .05 inch of ice accumulation.

“Exposed untreated surfaces will become slippery and make for hazardous driving and walking,” the weather service warned in issuing its advisory.

Any of the problems we'll see in our area will pale in comparison to the problems in northern New England this weekend, where thousands of homes lost power from an ice storm that will be the worst since the devastating ice storm of 1998.

The freezing rain advisory means that freezing rain or freezing drizzle could make travel difficult and that drivers should be prepared for slippery roads.

The greatest risk for freezing rain and ice build-up will be in the northern part of Essex County with a lower risk the closer to Route 128, although the advisory covers all of Essex and Middlesex counties.
