Five Things to Know on July 23: Dance School Ballerinas Perform ‘Pig” Story

An essential get-me-going daily morning column from Hamilton-Wenham Patch.

It is Tuesday, July 23. Here are five things you need to know in Hamilton and Wenham:

1. Rain: There’s an increased chance of rain on Tuesday, with the possibility of a thunderstorm. The rain could be heavy at times and when it is not raining it will be a mostly cloudy day, with temperatures in the 70s.

2. Bruins: It has become a tradition that mayors and governors engage in friendly bets with their colleagues in other cities involved in major sports championships. When the Boston Bruins faced the Chicago Black Hawks last month in the Stanley Cup finals, Gov. Deval Patrick placed a bet with Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn that if the Bruins lost he would volunteer at the Greater Chicago Food Depository. On Tuesday, Patrick travels to Chicago to make good on the promise. If the Bruins had won the Cup, Quinn would have traveled to Boston to volunteer at the Greater Boston Food Bank.

3. Unemployment: We’ll find out on Tuesday the latest unemployment statistics for Hamilton and Wenham. The state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development is slated to announce town-by-town unemployment data for June on Tuesday, which will include data for the two towns.

4. Pig: The Beverly Farms branch library will play host Tuesday to ballerinas from the Hamilton-Wenham School of Dance. Author David Ira Rottenberg will read his picture book “Gwendolyn the Graceful Pig” at 6:30 p.m. while the dancers perform the story. Afterward, a mini-movement lesson will be offered to children in the audience and Rottenberg will autograph his books. The performance is free and open to the public.

5. Museum: One program originally scheduled for Tuesday at Wenham Museum won’t happen, but another event is still planned. A fashion design workshop titled “It's All About the Hat!” originally scheduled to start on Tuesday will not happen. The museum on Tuesday will host a drop-in program for children where museum visitors can design a cardboard racer; play with Brio-style trains and race die-cast cars – all along with the theme of the museum’s latest exhibit, “Wheels: Getting from Here to There.”
