Five Things to Know on July 22: Kids Go Back to ‘School’ at the Farm

An essential get-me-going daily morning column from Hamilton-Wenham Patch.

It is Monday, July 22. Here are five things you need to know in Hamilton and Wenham:

1. 70s: The temperature is expected to stick in the 70s on Monday, giving us the first “cool” weekday in a while even as the humidity sticks around. The sky will be cloudy most of the day with a chance of a shower or thunderstorm in the afternoon.

2. Photos: If you’ve got a great photo from Hamilton or Wenham, or another spot on the North Shore, Monday is your last chance to enter a contest to have it featured on Facebook. U.S. Rep. John Tierney is running a contest to come up with a photo at the top of his Facebook page. All photo entries from the Sixth Congressional District should be sent to TierneyPhotoContest@gmail.com by the end of the day on Monday to be considered for the contest. Some of the entries so far are on display on Tierney’s Facebook page.

3. Farmers Markets: Don’t forget, there’s all sorts of great farmers market in the area every week. It starts on Monday afternoons and evenings with the Beverly Farmers Market from 3-7 p.m. The market sets up along Park Street and Railroad Avenue between the Beverly Depot and post office. There will be live entertainment from 4-6 p.m. The items in season right now include tomatoes, greens and summer squash. Markets later in the week occur in Gloucester, Peabody and Salem.

4. Candidates: Monday is the deadline for political action committees and legislative candidates to submit expense reports to the state’s Office of Campaign and Political Finance. Only legislative candidates and PACs are required to submit reports on their first half spending in what is an “off” year for state elections.

5. Farm School: One of Green Meadow Farm’s popular farm schools gets started on Monday – this one for age 5-9. It runs all week and teaches kids how a real farm works by having them help feed chickens and pigs, collect eggs and learn about organic vegetables.
