Five Things to Know: Friday Farm Dinner Features Summer Grilling and Salads

An essential get-me-going daily morning column from Hamilton-Wenham Patch.

It is Friday, July 19. Here are five things you need to know in Hamilton and Wenham:

1. Hot: It’s the same old story for Friday - the heat continues. The high temperature is forecasted to get to the mid-90s with sunny skies and a few clouds. In the afternoon, the wind could pick up and there is a chance of a thunderstorm.

2. Free Fun: Highland Street Foundation’s Free Fun Friday continues this week with free admission to several museums and cultural sites across the state. None of the sites are right here on the North Shore, but some are not that far away. JFK Museum and Library in Boston and Reagle Music Theatre in Waltham (a performance of Fiddler on the Roof) are both taking part, as is Danforth Art and Garden in the Woods, both in Framingham. If you’re up for a real road trip, Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford and Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsford are also participating. Wenham Museum takes part next month.

3. Performances: Art Grows Here serves up another batch of live performances on Saturday as part of its outdoor art exhibit that spans Hamilton and Wenham this week. Performances on Saturday start at 10 a.m. at Hamilton-Wenham Library and will include a poetry reading by Sylvia Collins, antagonist dance by Emma Andre, vocal duet by Katie Ryan and Mary Brao and Sosticks with Harry Sostek. It is free and open to the public.

4. Whittier Bridge: If your summer vacation plans take you up north –maybe you’re headed to North Conway or Maine – it’s good to remember that there’s some construction happening this summer on the Whittier Bridge, which carries I-95 across the Merrimack River in Newburyport. Next week, the plans announced by MassDOT call for some lane closures on the northern end of the project area.

5. Dinner: Appleton Farms puts on its “Appleton Cooks” Friday Night Dinner on Friday, with “Chef Donna” delivering a menu focusing on the grill and salads, including grilled planked fish tacos with citrus slaw, Orzo salad with grilled vegetables, feta, olives, and fresh herbs and grilled chicken kabobs with red onion, mint and grilled greek salad. The three hour cooking class at 6 p.m. ends with a shared meal. The cost is $75 for Trustees members and $85 for nonmembers.
