Trash Pickup Delayed by a Day This Week

A daily look at five things to know to get the day started from Hamilton-Wenham Patch.

It is Thursday, Dec. 26. Here are five things you need to know in Hamilton and Wenham:

1. Snow: There’s a chance of slight snow accumulation on Thursday, but it will also likely be mixed with rain and freezing rain at times. No more than an inch of snow is expected and the high temperature will be in the mid-30s.

2. Trash: Following the Christmas holiday on Wednesday, trash pickup will be delayed for the rest of the week. So anyone in Hamilton who typically gets their trash picked up on Wednesday will get it picked up on Thursday and the rest of the schedule is bumped back by a day. It is not a "black barrel week," so only recycling and organics are collected this week.

3. Hours: Most businesses and government offices return to normal hours on Thursday. One exception is the Department of Public Works and Water Department in Hamilton, which is closed on Thursday and will reopen Friday.

4. Boxing Day: Thursday is Boxing Day, a holiday celebrated the day after Christmas in most areas of the world with English influence, including Australia, Canada and England. In Canada, it is a big day to watch hockey and in English many soccer games are played. The origin of the holiday dates back to the 19th century when the merchant class gave “boxes” of food, clothing and money to tradespeople and servants.
