Thanksgiving Features Football, Floats and Feasts
A daily look at five things to know to get the day started from Hamilton-Wenham Patch.
It is Thursday, Nov. 28. Here are five things you need to know in Hamilton and Wenham:
1. Cold: After a wild day of weather on Wednesday, with heavy rain, gusty winds and warm temperatures, a much more typical fall day returns for Thanksgiving with the forecast calling for a high temperature around freezing with sunny skies, but the winds will still be around, blowing at 14-18 miles per hour from the west with gusts to 38 mph.
2. Football: The rivalry continues on Thanksgiving, with the Generals and Tigers meeting on the gridiron in Ipswich at 10 a.m. on Thursday morning for the annual matchup. While the new football format had the two teams facing each other in the regular season (the Generals won), the nearly 40-year old tradition continues on Thanksgiving morning.

3. Race: Thanksgiving morning road races are a tradition in many communities. There’s no race here in the two towns, but Turkey Day gets started with a road race in several nearby communities. Salem has the largest race on the North Shore, the 10th Annual Wild Turkey 5 Mile Run that starts and finishes at the Boys and Girls Club at 8 a.m. West Newbury has the 24th Annual Winner’s Circle Running Club Wild Turkey Trot 5K at 8:30 a.m. and Newburyport has the 25th Annual Maudslay 5K Turkey Trot at Maudslay State Park at 8:20 a.m. Of course, the big race in Hamilton is Gabe’s Run, on the day after Thanksgiving at Patton Park.
4. Parade: The huge balloons will take to the air in New York City on Thanksgiving morning in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, one of the largest parades in the country that is often a source of entertainment for families and dinner preparing is happening. The forecast for gusty winds in New York may keep the ballons out of the parade, but either way it starts at 9 a.m. and is on NBC (channel 7).

5. Hanukkah: Thanksgiving Day on Thursday is also the first day of Hanukkah for Jews. The two holidays won’t align again for what is said to be another 70,000 years.
