Kids raised $892.20 on Wednesday for the Friends of Patton Park in the effort to install a new playground at Patton Park. They races about a quarter mile across the park and paid $5 each to enter the race. Some children paid the entrance fee themselves toward the effort. The group plans to break ground in the spring for a new playground at the park. The idea started with an idea that came from the children of the chairwomen of the fundraisng effort. The children said that their parents had been working so hard to raise the money for the playground they wanted to do something to help them. "We…

Artists from the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District have been awarded five gold keys, two silver keys and seven honorable mentions in the 2012 Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards. The announcement was made recently by the district's Fine Arts Department. It was a sold-out evening of fun at the Community House on Saturday night at its first Father-Daughter Winter Ball. "It was a great evening for everyone," said Carolyn Blaney, the Community House's marketing and sales manager. "People are still talking about it." And one mother wrote to Blaney to say that her "husband and daughter loved (Saturday) night's ball and are already looking forward to going again next year." Hamilton firefighters trained for six hours on Saturday morning in a vacant home that was donated to the department. The 17 firefighters that took part in the training had an opportunity to use various skills – from advancing a charged hose line in a home and ventilating a building to forcible entry and overhaul. “Stage smoke” was used in the home, but everything else was real. “The only difference was that we didn’t have the heat,” said Hamilton Fire Chief Phil Stevens. A tradition at Buker Elementary School in Wenham continued last Tuesday when the first and second grade teachers asked their students to think about "giving" during the holiday season. The two classes have been working with the Acord Food Pantry in Hamilton to provide ingredients for a Christmas breakfast. Instead of selecting a small gift for their teachers, they have collected pancake mixes, canned fruit, syrup and canned hams. Businesses from Hayfields in Shoppes at Hamilton Crossing to Crows Corner in 300 at Main across to Jolie Tea Co. on Bay Road to Timeless Interiors on Railroad Avenue all participated.
Joanne Patton was honored Monday morning by the “Wreaths Across America” traveling memorial, just hours before town officials unveiled her plan to donate her home and more than two dozen acres to the town. Patton, the daughter-in-law of Gen. George S. Patton, has been discussing with Town Manager Michael Lombardo the possibility of donating her upper Asbury Street home and 27 acres to the town. Spirit Week was in full-force at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School on Tuesday as Nick Ristaino, history teacher and student government advisor, rallied students to the donut-eating competition out in the courtyard during both lunch periods. Four contestants representing each class at both lunch periods competed for 100 points. At the end of the week, the class with the most points gets the coveted distinction of the most school spirit along with a trophy. Veterans and town officials in both Hamilton and Wenham honored veterans in separate observances on Veterans Day on Friday. At Cheeseman Field in Pingree Park in Wenham, a wreath was laid in memory of Alan Cheeseman, the only Wenham resident killed in Vietnam. "Let us remember they left their families and did whatever they were assigned," Col. Stuart Corning said at the prayer. In Hamilton, veterans were honored in an observance at Hamilton Cemetery after marching up Route 1A from Hamilton Town Hall. Students from Buker Elementary School, Cutler Elementary School and Winthrop Elementary School all filled Roller Palace in Beverly on Thursday afternoon, skating around and having fun. They showed off their moves - including to the macarena and hokey pokey.
