The re-opening this week of 15 Walnut Bistro, with an expanded bar and renovated dining room, is just the latest change at the Shoppes at Hamilton Crossing.

The 39,000 square foot retail plaza, the main shopping center in Hamilton, has seen shops come and go.

In the past year, Helene M, Scribe and Viola Lovely have closed or relocated from the plaza. Viola Lovely moved to Main Street in Wenham while Scribe closed its Hamilton store, but still has a location in Marblehead. Helene M closed its Hamilton location, but has locations in Newburyport, Portsmouth, N.H. and Portland, Maine.

There is currently one vacancy of the 14 retail footprints.

It was about five years ago when Lisco Development renovated the shopping plaza, which was built in 1957, according to property manager Linda Mieggs.

Mieggs said the property owner is close to signing a lease with a new tenant for the unoccupied space.

Along with the restaurant, the Shoppes at Hamilton Crossing is anchored by CVS and Crosby's Market, and the plaza includes a Bank of America branch, Anton's Cleaners and a Dunkin' Donuts

The new businesses in the plaza feature a women's clothing boutique, French Lessons, which relocated from Bay Road next to the Black Cow; a day spa, Taylor Danielle, which also relocated from Bay Road, and a gym, Get in Shape for Women.

"We try to serve the community's needs," Mieggs said. "It's the area in town where people tend to congregate."

Hamilton-Wenham Patch asked some locals who were shopping at the plaza where they shop.

While I love to support my local stores, I can't afford the prices that these particular stores charge because the rent is exorbitant. The shops have to charge high prices in order to pay the rent! With the internet now, most of order on line and most of the time it's free shipping so it's a win,win situation. Carol Mazzetta

its time we had so down to earth level stores, like a 5 and dime type store or stores than don't carry gold covered items...if it wasn't for CVS and Crosby's, this mall would die......
