Thieves Hit Vehicles Overnight in Wenham
Several overnight car break-ins were reported in Wenham, where police recommend residents lock their car door, keep lights on and report suspicious activity to police.
Wallets, money and GPS devices were taken from several vehicles – most of them left unlocked – overnight in Wenham.
The thefts occurred between 11 p.m. on Wednesday and 5 a.m. on Thursday, Wenham Police Chief Ken Walsh said in a written statement released on Thursday afternoon. Police did not say exactly how many reports were received about vehicle break-ins and how many were from unlocked vehicles versus locked vehicles.
The thefts occurred along Topsfield Road (Route 97) and several side streets in the western part of the town.
The thefts come on the heels of several overnight vehicle break-ins in other nearby communities in recent days. In Danvers, police said several unlocked cars were entered and items were taken between Sunday and Wednesday. Danvers police issued a public alert about the thefts on Wednesday morning.
Hamilton Police Lt. Scott Janes said no vehicle break-ins were reported in Hamilton on Wednesday night or Thursday morning.
Wenham police ask anyone with information about the break-ins to call them at 978-468-4000.
Police are also reminding residents to lock their car doors, keep outside lights on and report suspicious activity to the police immediately.

I would like to receive an email from the Wenham Police Department when something like this occurs. In my opinion, when an issue involving the safety and protection of our children and homes is at issue, our law enforcement could notify citizens straight away. Effective and efficient communication can only help.

In a large urban environment this wouldn't be possible but in a small community like Wenham perhaps it could be done. Do you want emails from police on everything they do? Probably not so where do you draw the line for what requires "direct" contact and what doesn't. People get tired pretty quickly of those "connect ed" messages and I bet they'd tire of hearing from Wenham PD in their email too. Patch updates may be the best approach here.

It's exactly in a town such as Wenham where this would be possible. If it concerns the health, safety, and protection of our children, families and homes, I think it is easy to weed out what is and what is not pertinent. For example, last spring when a child was approached at Pingree Park by a strange man, I received email messages from numerous sources (t-ball and baseball coaches, Connect Ed) except for the police--the information should have come from them initially and immediately once the facts were clear.
