Non-Spectators Should Avoid Cutler and Waldingfield Roads

Tips to get around in Hamilton this weekend as thousands of spectators are expected to arrive in town to watch the Myopia Sled Dog Races.

Residents hoping to avoid the onslaught of as many as 10,000 spectators expected to converge in Hamilton for this weekend’s Myopia Sled Dog Races should avoid Cutler Road and Waldingfield Road.

Other than that, police and organizers said Friday they anticipate traffic will flow freely on all the other roads in towns, including main roads such as Bay Road (Route 1A) and Highland Street.

Hamilton Police Chief Russell Stevens said that Cutler Road will be closed to through traffic during the races on both days. A police officer will be stationed at both ends – at the intersection with Highland Street and the intersection with Bay Road.

“If you live in that area you can get through there,” Stevens said, “But it will be closed to through traffic.”

Since the course crosses Cutler Road in two places, organizers have said it is a good place to watch.

But Stevens cautions spectators to be careful about parking along roads that have been narrowed by the large snowbanks.

“We have to be able to get emergency vehicles through at all times,” he said.

The start and finish lines for all of the races will be off Waldingfield Road in Ipswich – an extension of Hamilton’s Waldingfield Road that runs from Highland Street to Bay Road. Traffic may back up at times near the entrance to the main paring area.

“Otherwise, I don’t anticipate any traffic backups at all,” Stevens said.
