Man Cuts Off Finger in Construction Accident

A man cut off his finger in a construction accident on Wednesday in Hamilton.

A contractor working to rebuild a home destroyed by fire last winter had a finger cut off in a construction accident on Wednesday.

Hamilton police said the 25-year old worker from Groveland was using a circular saw on the first floor of the home, where he was cutting some strapping when the saw severed his left index finder, according to Hamilton Police Officer Michael Wetson. The worker’s name was not released.

and responded to 1 Beech St. after a 911 call at 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday.

The injured man was taken by Lyons ambulance to and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified. Police and firefighters secured the worksite until OSHA representatives arrived.

OSHA spokesman Ted Fitzgerald said representatives from the Andover Area Office were called to the work site and opened an inspection after being told that an employee of contractor Robert A. Murrin Construction Inc. was injured while operating a hand held circular saw.

Murrin had been hired by general contractor Howes Carpentry of Ipswich as part of work to frame the home, which is being rebuilt after . Last month, the Hamilton Zoning Board , making it slightly larger. It sits waterfront on Chebacco Lake.

“The purpose of OSHA's inspection is to determine which workplace safety standards apply in this situation and whether or not those standards were complied with by the employer,” Fitzgerald said in an e-mail.

If violations are found, OSHA could issue citations and propose a fine to the employer.

The investigation will take several weeks, Fitzgerald said.
