Jolie Tea Company opens its doors on Bay Road in South Hamilton; Giggles toy shop will close.
Wenham businesswoman Amy Job opened her new shop in South Hamilton last month, bringing variety and flavor to the business district that has, at times, struggled with store closings.
Job's shop, Jolie Tea Company, now occupies the space formerly held by French Lessons, which moved to the Shoppes at Hamilton Crossing across Bay Road.
The tea shop offers more than 70 varieties of loose teas, from traditional black teas to white, green and herbal teas.
"We're enhancing people's interest or introducing people to tea," Job said. "A big part is educating the customer. It's opening up the tea world and the culture of tea."
Job said the shop will hold two tea tastings each month.
Before putting her career on hold to become a mother, Job was a biologist working in cancer research and then worked in the catering business.
"This has been a 20-year dream," Job said. "When this spot opened up, it was a great location for me."
The shop, its walls stocked with shelves of tea pots and cups, has a "French theme," Job said.
Finds here include tea cookies, Madeleines and French candies; books on tea; and other tea accessories.
Giggles Toys & Gifts closing April 30
The toy shop and consignment store Giggles will be closing its doors permanently on April 30.
Shop owner Aimee Oliver said a lack of steady business and the economic downturn are forcing her to shutter the store, which has been located on Railroad Avenue for five years.
"There's no business — or not enough business," Oliver said. "The economy is not helping either."
Oliver said she is hoping to arrange with North Shore Community Action Programs to open a consignment business at one of its locations.
"I do thank all my loyal customers," Oliver said. "I had some great customers and I enjoyed getting to know all the people."
In other business news, the vacant store on Bay Road that was occupied by Taylor Danielle Day Spa, will soon be occupied by a real estate broker.

very sad to see Giggles leave town. I think we need more stores that sell moderate priced items and items we need (not just special extras)

Bonus for me of going into Giggles the other day: I stopped into Hamilton House of Pizza for a slice. Great little shop.
